Section 4: Project Research

The starting point for the team was to research the place to download ubuntu. Ubuntu is an operating system with an open source platform. Ubuntu can be downloaded from the following website http://www.ubuntu.com. This software is an alternative to Windows and is free of charge. After downloading and installation ubuntu 9.04, the team started looking for software to provide simulation. The team used GNS3 which is a graphical network simulator that allows users to design network topologies and run simulations. Information about this software can be accessed by going to the following website http://www.gns3.net. GNS3 can be run on Windows and Linux systems and emulate Cisco routers’ IOS. This software provides features which include:high quality and complex network topologies, emulation of many Cisco router platforms and PIX firewalls, simulation of simple Ethernet, ATM and Frame Relay switches. After research it was found that IOS images of routers were necessary to be loaded to the software in order to emulate such routers. The IOS is a package for routing, switching, internetworking, and telecommunications functions integrated with a multitasking operating system. These images were provided by the lab manager of the att lab. The IOS images were copied from the att routers to a TFTP server. The GNS3 depends on other programs to operate which they normally come with the software by default. Packages such as Dynamips and python-qt4 are required to run GNS3 on ubuntu.
