Voice over IP System

Proposal: Voice over IP System

The University of Houston’s College of Technology Research Network consists of a campus-wide telecommunications network that connects several research laboratories to international and regional networks. At the moment, voice communication among the laboratories and lab management is non-existent. A connection to the Public System Telephone Network (PSTN) is available in Lab Management through an analog connection. Our team plans to make use of this connection to expand the voice communication to several research labs using a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) based on Session Initiation Protocol (SIP).

To install the VoIP system, the team will set up a SIP server in the Internet that is running open-source Asterisk and register the phones to this server. In addition, the team members will have to install and configure the phones. If the team's configuration fulfills its purpose within their local area networks, they can easily connect and make calls to the outside. Computers in the computer labs will have XLITE (Ubuntu Linux, Windows) soft phones. Hard phones will also be installed in teh system,. Further research into security measures on VoIP networks will be studied in order to prevent attacks and protect information.
